{"id":510,"date":"2012-07-16T21:28:23","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T20:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itayemi.com\/blog\/?p=510"},"modified":"2012-07-16T21:37:56","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T20:37:56","slug":"happiness-lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itayemi.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/16\/happiness-lost\/","title":{"rendered":"Happiness Lost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happiness Lost<\/p>\n<p>I am standing on the pier<br \/>\nMy head bowed not against the wind<br \/>\nBut to hide the tears<br \/>\nA grown man must not shed<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What ails thee&#8221; Said the boatman<br \/>\n&#8220;My earnings are in kobos* and coins.<br \/>\nBut perhaps I can help&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I see him true and kind<br \/>\nThough lacking the gift of the &#8220;eye&#8221;<br \/>\nWill he dip his oar into my heaving chest<br \/>\nAnd stop the waves of despair?<\/p>\n<p>So I lingered at the doctor&#8217;s door<br \/>\nHe bade me step in for a moments span<br \/>\nA friendly ear in desperate times<br \/>\nBut failing to perceive what cannot be seen,<br \/>\nHe bade me adieu and pocketed his fees<\/p>\n<p>Then I went seeking nothing at the weekly market<br \/>\nHoping the noise would drown my thoughts<br \/>\nBut though they screamed like the occupants of hell<br \/>\nIt was as whispers in my ears<\/p>\n<p>I found myself seated at a buka&#8217;s* table<br \/>\nI looked at the food as if it was alien fare<br \/>\nSo the cook rested a while from roasting by her roaring flames<br \/>\n&#8220;Is the food lacking salt,&#8221; she asked<br \/>\n&#8220;Or the meat too hard for delicate teeth?&#8221;<br \/>\nCan she use fresh meat to mend the tear in my broken heart?<br \/>\nOr flames to sear the memories away?<br \/>\nSo I paid my due and left the meal untouched<\/p>\n<p>Where was I but in the vaulted halls<br \/>\nOn hallowed grounds in the neighborhood church<br \/>\nIt was at sunset that the priest found me<br \/>\nJust as I was on my knees an age ago<br \/>\nwhen the cock woke both the rich and poor<br \/>\n&#8220;My son&#8221; he said, though my age he was<br \/>\n&#8220;Some things cannot be fixed,<br \/>\nWhen the damage is done.<br \/>\nLook to Christ since you believe.<br \/>\nHis Hands are long<br \/>\nAnd his hearing keen<br \/>\nSo tarry awhile and pray a bit<br \/>\nHe will heal your heart<br \/>\nAnd perhaps grant your wish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But happiness is lost<br \/>\nWhen I refused an offered heart<br \/>\nI struggled to regain it<br \/>\nBut Alas! Too late! It has been offered out<br \/>\nBetter a man than I, I guess<\/p>\n<p>So once again I stood at the piers<br \/>\nAnd let the wind blow away my tears<br \/>\nAnd asked the boatman to ferry me away<br \/>\n&#8220;To where?&#8221;, he asked<br \/>\n&#8220;Anywhere where my thoughts can not follow&#8221;<br \/>\nHe looked at me and saw the pain<br \/>\nSo he cast his boat adrift on the roiling waves<\/p>\n<p>And trailing my fingers in the sea<br \/>\nI thought I heard your laugh<br \/>\nTinkling in the deeming lights<br \/>\nlike silver bells gently in the wind<br \/>\nWhich once brought me delight and joy<br \/>\nBut it was the sea gulls<br \/>\nMaking light of my broken dreams<\/p>\n<p>And shining in the dark far from shore<br \/>\nTwo lines of salty thread<br \/>\nseeking path from eyes to jaw<br \/>\nlike drops of blood dripping on wood<br \/>\ncarrying hapiness to your ears I hope<br \/>\nwhile I linger upon this flimsy tray<br \/>\nand wish the wind would carry my sadness away<\/p>\n<p>*Kobo &#8211; coins of the Nigerian currency *Buka &#8211; public restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itayemi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hapiness_lost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"hapiness_lost\" src=\"http:\/\/www.itayemi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/hapiness_lost.jpg\" alt=\"Me and the boatman\" width=\"486\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happiness Lost I am standing on the pier My head bowed not against the wind But to hide the tears A grown man must not shed &#8220;What ails thee&#8221; Said the boatman &#8220;My earnings are in kobos* and coins.
